Working principle of residual current circuit breaker

Residual Current Circuit Breaker(RCCB)
Residual Current Circuit Breaker primarily operates based on the principle of current balance. Under normal conditions, the currents in the phase line (live wire) and the neutral line are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. Consequently, the vector sum of these currents equals zero. Inside the Residual Current Circuit Breaker, there is a zero-sequence current transformer that detects any difference between the currents in the phase and neutral lines.

If leakage occurs in the circuit—i.e., when current flows to the ground through a human body or other conductor—the current in the phase line becomes greater than that in the neutral line. This causes the vector sum of the currents to deviate from zero. At this point, the zero-sequence current transformer detects this current difference and activates the trip mechanism inside the Residual Current Circuit Breaker, rapidly cutting off the circuit. This prevents electric shock accidents involving the human body.

Therefore, the RCCB is critically important in electrical safety. It effectively safeguards personal safety by preventing electric shock accidents caused by leakage. Simultaneously, it requires that we adhere to relevant electrical safety regulations during the installation and operation of electrical equipment. This ensures good insulation performance of electrical equipment and minimizes leakage risks.

The main functions of the Residual Current Circuit Breaker are reflected in three aspects:

Protecting Personal Safety:
This is the core function of the Residual Current Circuit Breaker. When a person comes into contact with leaking electrical equipment, the switch promptly cuts off the power supply. This prevents current from passing through the human body, thereby avoiding electric shock accidents.

Preventing Electrical Fires:
In some scenarios, leakage may cause electrical equipment to overheat and even ignite fires. By immediately cutting off the power supply, the residual current circuit breaker can effectively prevent such situations, protecting lives and property.

Ensuring Normal Equipment Operation:
Long-term leakage not only endangers humans and equipment but may also disrupt the normal operation of electrical systems. The timely activation of the residual current protection switch prevents this situation, ensuring stable and safe equipment operation.

In summary, the residual current circuit breaker plays a vital role in electrical safety and serves as an indispensable safeguard in our daily lives.
